Yellowstone TV Show is an American drama, that premiered on the Paramount Network on June 20, 2018. Taylor Sheridan and John Linson are the creators of this show. The series follows the Dutton family, who are the owners of the largest ranch in the United States. The plot revolves around family drama and the disputes between the major cattle ranch, a Native reservation, and land developers from that area. Yellowstone blends themes of family values, romance, filthy politics, and human nature at its worst into a compelling story.
Let’s take a look at the major cast members and the plot of the three seasons aired so far!
Cast of the Yellowstone TV Show
Kevin Costner as John Dutton – The owner of Yellowstone Ranch:
John Dutton is the 6th generation owner of the largest ranch in the whole USA. He is a Montana native who hails from a long family of ranchers, which explains his attachment to the land. He is continuously busy in one war or another to hold on to his heritage, alongside his fairly dysfunctional family.
Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton:
Beth is John Dutton’s third child and only daughter. Beth is resentful, emotionally unstable, and has a substance abuse issue. Despite all that, she is well educated, incredibly clever, and a superb manipulator. She is a financier as well. When it’s time to step up for her family, it doesn’t take much for her loyalty to kick in. In the middle of it all, she gets herself into a few personal squabbles.
Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton:
John’s youngest son, Kayce Dutton, is a former US Navy SEAL. Since his father is grooming him to inherit the ranch, he will most likely be his successor. His allegiance is divided, unlike his sister. He’s split between his responsibilities towards the Reservation – his native American wife’s ancestral home on one hand, and the ranch where he grew up on the other. This affects his relationship with his father. Overall, he’s a nuanced and complex character with a lot of internal conflicts.
Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton:
Jamie is John’s second oldest child. Despite being an attorney, he aspires to be a politician. Despite his total devotion to his father, he faces his father’s disapproval time and again. Jamie’s relationship with his father has even more friction than what one would find with Kayce and John. He is woefully underappreciated by the majority of the family, despite the fact that he dedicates his entire life to the survival of their business.
Cole Hauser is Rip Wheeler:
At the Yellowstone Ranch, Rip Wheeler is the foreman. He also serves as John’s right-hand guy and enforcer. After Dutton takes him in from being a teenage runaway, Rip has worked on the ranch for many years and is fiercely loyal to John. Rip has a tight relationship with the Duttons, having a father-son bond with John, a rivalry with Kayce, and an on-and-off romance with Beth.
Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long Dutton:
Monica Long Dutton is Kayce’s native-American wife and John’s daughter-in-law. Her allegiance to Broken Rock and her bond with the Duttons are a constant source of conflict throughout the series. However, as her character advances, she creates her own story being an advocate of indigenous women’s suffering.
Gil Birmingham as Chief Thomas Rainwater:
Though John Dutton has a slew of foes, Chief Thomas Rainwater has remained his most steadfast opponent. He’s both a casino owner and the Chief of Broken Rock, and he has a burning desire to serve his people. His main goal is to restore his ancestor’s land, which happens to be the acreage that surrounds the Yellowstone ranch. He doesn’t see eye to eye with the Dutton Patriarch, as one would expect.
Josh Holloway is Roarke Morris:
Roarke is a troublemaker from the start, a hedge fund manager whose sole goal is to gain money at all costs. Roarke transitioned from a life of crime to a career in land development in Montana. He knows how to obtain what he wants and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty in the process. For example, he pairs up with Willa Hayes, a dubious character, to take on the Duttons.
Plot Overview of the Yellowstone TV Show
Yellowstone TV Show – Season One
Yellowstone Ranch is going toe-to-toe with the Broken Rock reservation, who believe the boundaries put in place by Dutton family are purely artificial. They believe they can still claim rights to a large amount of the ranch’s land, as well as the livestock that resides there. To make matters worse, while leading the charge against Broken Rock Reservation, John also has to keep an eye on Dan, a land developer on a quest to buy Yellowstone Ranch for development purposes. In addition to all of this, John has been keeping a hidden cancer diagnosis to himself. However, before he succumbs to his cancer, he must ensure that his children are ready to take over the matters.
Yellowstone TV Show – Season Two
For the second season, we meet the Beck Brothers, the Duttons‘ newest adversaries. The Beck brothers, in addition to Thomas Rainwater and Dan Jenkins, have become a thorn in the Dutton family’s way. However, John recognizes that the Beck brothers are trouble for Rainwater and Jenkins as well. And as a result, two of John’s most vehement foes become his allies. We also see that John doesn’t actually have colon cancer, but an ulcer.
Jamie’s interest in politics and desire to be Attorney General, along with John’s backing for a different candidate, led him to speak with a writer looking for dirt on the Duttons. He ultimately realizes he’s made a terrible mistake and pulls out of the race. Jamie then returns to the ranch to work. He also assassinates the journalist who was about to expose the Duttons.
The hatred between the Duttons and the Becks escalates when the brothers send in their men to attack Beth. Fortunately, Rip arrives on the scene and manages to save her. Beck Brothers are, however, able to eliminate Jenkins and kidnap Kayce’s son. At this time, John realizes that the only option left is to kill the Beck Brothers.
Yellowstone TV Show – Season Three
Jamie is back at the Dutton Ranch as an attorney, and he uses his legal wizardry to keep his family safe from the repercussions of killing the Beck Brothers and their men. In the aftermath of the Beck Brothers‘ attack, John agrees to relinquish his position as Livestock Commissioner – the protector of the ranch. Kayce eventually gets the job, and he aces in the new role.
Meanwhile, the Duttons learn that they have a new foe in town: Market Equities. This investment firm purchased Jenkins‘ property and now wishes to purchase the Dutton Ranch. They aim to build an airport on the site as well. Roarke has arrived in town to figure out how to accomplish this. They put together a $500 million bid for the Dutton Ranch, which John turns down. Beth and Jamie, on the other hand, believe that their father should accept the money and sell it. Regardless of her feelings, Beth sticks by her father and begins shorting Market Equities shares to oppose them.
The massive cliffhanger at the end of Season 3
The third season of Yellowstone concluded with what appeared to be a coordinated assault on the Dutton family. While assisting a woman with a flat tire, John was shot on the side of the road. After gunmen invaded his workplace, Kayce took cover behind his desk. Beth was packing up her office when her assistant opened a package that exploded. Fans were left wondering who was behind the attacks as the season came to a close, and who would make it through Season 3 alive.
