Drifting Home is an upcoming Netflix Original Japanese anime movie directed by Hiroyasu Ishida, written by Hayashi Mori. Ishida is known for his work on Penguin Highway and Fumiko’s Confession, while Mori is known for working on popular anime titles such as Cells at Work! and Code Black. Upon release, Drifting Home will be the third movie produced by Studio Colorido, which comes after A Whisker Away and Penguin Highway.

Cast

The film will follow a young boy named Kosuke and a young girl named Natsume, who was described in the official synopsis as friends since childhood. Furthermore, as time goes on, the relationship between the two sixth-graders seems strained as they keep avoiding one another. They reunite at the building where they both grew up, but soon the casual hang-out turns into a much bigger adventure.

The film will follow Kosuke and Natsume’s friendship as they navigate growing older and drifting apart. It looks like the two will have a few friends coming along for the ride, including two other boys and two other girls; there are no details yet about their names, personalities, or stories.

Plot of Drifting Home

According to the trailer, Kosuke and Natsume have been friends since childhood. However, over time, the relationship between the two sixth-graders seems tense as they continue to avoid each other. One day during their summer vacation, they go to a residential complex that is slated to be demolished.

They grow up there and harbor many memories. However, one day while playing, they suddenly entangled in a mysterious phenomenon. Furthermore, when they recover consciousness, they witness an entire ocean in front of them; since the housing complex has floated into a mystery sea, taking Kosuke and Natsume with it. Will they be able to return to their previous world?

Release date of Drifting Home

At Netflix’s TUDUM virtual fan event, which took place on September 25, 2021, the streamer paid special attention to the upcoming anime, which included Drifting Home. This Studio Colorido’s new film looks to be well on its way to release, with Netflix premiering a short teaser trailer at the event, as well as a hint at when to expect the movie (deadline).

However, just like with many other animes, the release date mentioned at the event wasn’t very specific. Netflix announced that Drifting Home would be coming out sometime in 2022.
