Jujutsu Kaisen is a supernatural horror anime from the shonen genre. It only has a single season aired so far that premiered in the fall of 2020. There are 24 episodes in the first season. We are introduced to a diverse group of characters in this season itself. The series explores the theme of Demons and Schools. It is based on the manga with the same name by Gege Akutami.
This anime series carved its own niche in the shonen genre due to its characters. We will go through some of the main ones and explore their background.
Sukuna (King of Curses) Roumen – Big Bad of Jujutsu Kaisen
He is the primary antagonist of the series. Despite his reputation of being ‘the King of Curses’, he regularly fails to take over Itadori. Don’t let that fool you though because he possesses unfathomable power at his disposal. All the demons that have appeared so far have had a really tough time to even stand in front of him, let alone giving him a tough fight. Sukuna is a cold-hearted, selfish, and careless demon who enjoys taunting Itadori every now and then. Fans have certainly taken a liking for him and it is to be seen how his character grows from here.
Kento Nanami
If somebody has to be the true example of a pure professional, it has to be Kento Nanami. He treats his designation of a Jujutsu Sorcerer as a job like any other and even denies fighting the demons past office hours. He has openly expressed his hatred for working overtime. His personality is in stark contrast to that of his colleague, Satoru Gojo. He is one of the strongest sorcerers in the series and does well to protect Itadori and other sorcerers from trouble.
Aoi Toudou
There is something about him that reminds me of Sound Hashira from Demon Slayer and Major Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. There are only 2 ways that you can go about Aoi, either to love him or to hate him. Nothing in between. His moods are unpredictable and violent but when he finds someone with the right spirit, he fights by their side admirably. His bromance with Itadori is one of the best due to some good yet hilarious reasons.
Nobara Kugisaki – the Hermione of the main trio in Jujutsu Kaisen
She is the female component in the main trio of the series. Nobara is not as goofy as Itadori, nor as serious as Fushiguro. Her personality is somewhere in between these two extremes. She is not as strong as the other two from the trio but continues to work on herself and improves with each passing day. She uses a hammer, nails, and voodoo dolls for her sorcery. Nobara has got a burning spirit and endless energy in her which provides the necessary strength to the team whenever needed.
Megumi Fushiguro – Mystery personified
He comes from a revered sorcerer family and is a really powerful sorcerer himself. More of a subdued and no non-sense personality, Megumi keeps the team grounded. Despite being a first-year student at Jujutsu High, he has shown the incredible potential that has even caught the attention of ‘King of Curses’ himself. From the beginning of the series, he is surrounded by mystery and not much is known about him. He is the second member of the main trio after Nobara.
Yuji Itadori – the lead in Jujutsu Kaisen
Sukuna’s vessel, Itadori, is the main protagonist of the series. Right from the start, we see him willing to sacrifice his life in order to save others around him. He has a goofy, ethically correct, and nearly unflappable personality. Together with Megumi and Nobara, he completes the main trio. Not the strongest sorcerer of the show as of now, he has immense latent power waiting to be awakened. This will also be aided by the fact that Sukuna himself resides in him. He is also a fast learner which was evident from the way he learned Black Flash from Aoi Toudou while on a battle.
Satoru Gojo – the OP
Gojo is perhaps the most loved character in the show. He is the teacher and mentor to the students of Jujutsu High in Tokyo. Although being a sensei-like person, he is the most childish in Jujutsu High. He forms the comedic duo with Itadori. Additionally, the interactions between these two mostly come as comic reliefs. His powers are on a level so high that we have barely scratched the surface. Despite not using much of his abilities, he effortlessly negates the threats around him. Plot armor is the only thing that saves anyone who goes against him. With Itadori’s untapped potential and Gojo’s unexplored powers, we can expect powerful things coming our way in the seasons to come.
