The trailer for Spiderman: No Way Home just came out and it looks absolutely fantastic. Like most Marvel movies (not you Captain Marvel), it looks like a visual spectacle and all over a good time. The humor we expect from the MCU is as always present and really it just looks like any other big budget Marvel movie. Except this time, all the Spidermen are being brought over to the Marvel universe and that makes them canon! This is huge for any fan like me that has watched the old Toby McGuire movies and to an extent the rare Andrew Garfield enjoyer. He’s had his Homecoming. He’s been far away from home. But now, Peter Parker has no way home.
From where it starts
In the last movie we’ve seen Spiderman being blamed for the death of Mysterio. His secret identity is also out. Obviously, when we see the opening scene where Peter is enjoying a little leisure with MJ we assume he’s going to clear his name eventually during the early parts of the movie. The parts shot near the subway and of Spiderman swinging through a city with the billboards calling him out is probably from the opening of the movie. Now, Spiderman goes to Dr. Strange on what looks like Halloween to reverse this newfound popularity/infamy. We see Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as Dr. Strange agreeing to it caution thrown sideways in the most Marvel way possible.
The plot seems kinda shaky with Dr. Strange’s spell going haywire due to Tom Holland talking too much? Marvel isn’t famous for incredible plots so I’m already spared the disappointment with no expectation in that regard. So Dr. Strange’s spell reunites all the Spiderman but also the respective super villains. J Jonah Jameson returns finally at the helm of the Daily Bugle which is now an Alex Jonesque show rather than a publication. It’s clear that the media is trashing Spiderman which is a comic book element I really appreciate. J.K. Simmons plays J Jonah which is not only a huge throwback to the old Sam Raimi movies but also the perfect casting. Really can’t imagine anyone else playing that role.
The Sinister Six (Spiderman: No Way Home)
Yeah, “The Amazing Spiderman” flirted with the idea of the sinister six, a group of six of the Spiderman timeline’s greatest villains, the execution was not so good. Now, with the old villains all coming back, it looks like a real possibility. Of course, first we have to talk about Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octopus returning. This is something that set off alarm bells for everyone who has watched the Raimi movies. Alfred Molina was the perfect Doc Oc and it’s great to see him back. Also making their way back are William Defoe as Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx as Electro. Now we know this through the maniacal laughing and pumpkin bomb in case of Defoe (as shown in the trailer) and police officers being attacked by electrical discharge in case of Foxx. Electro is not the best loved villain in the franchise but Jamie Foxx is decent as Electro and will be arriving with a new costume. The trailer teases Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, and The Lizard. There should be one more and we’ll find out more as time passes.
Multiverse (Spiderman: No Way Home)
Marvel has just created a great way for them to maintain continuity in the cinematic universe we can see in the movie that Spiderman steals a cube like object from Dr.Strange trying to undo the spell resulting in a huge chase sequence through the mirror dimension.
It looks visually incredible especially the train sequence where Dr. strange explains the multiverse. Of course this will be tying in with the Marvel series Loki and Wandavision. The end of this movie could be the beginning of a new Dr. Strange movie. We have to wait and see that. The burning question is will Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield reprise their respective Spidey roles in this movie? With the villains coming in, the heroes can’t be far behind. So the possibility is strong but not confirmed officially yet. We see in a scene Aunt May and Peter looking shocked at someone entering the room. Could it be a past Spiderman?
Conclusion
With success of the animation “Spiderman into the Spiderverse”, we can safely say that people are suckers for multiverse movies. “No Way Home” looks to be a phenomenal attempt to create the absolute best Spiderman movie yet and honestly I’m excited. We’ll see what unfolds as we get closer to the movie. Till then the hype continues.
